Tavira
The City That Welcomes Āshrama
Between the hills and the sea, crossed by the Gilão River and marked by its light, white houses and historic streets, Tavira is a city that invites you to slow down.
It is a place where history and nature remain deeply present in everyday life: in the river that crosses the city, in the salt pans stretching towards Ria Formosa, in the beaches, the old streets and the landscape connecting the coast to the hills.
It was in this place that we chose to create Āshrama Tavira.
Since 2013, Āshrama has been part of this city, bringing to the heart of Tavira a place dedicated to the practice and knowledge of Traditional Yoga from India.
Tavira, between the hills and the sea
Tavira lies in the eastern Algarve, in a territory where the hills, the barrocal and the coast meet.
The city has developed around the Gilão River, which crosses its historic centre and follows its course towards Ria Formosa and the sea. Throughout this territory, we find salt pans, agricultural fields, wetlands, beaches and a naturally diverse landscape.
Tavira’s history is also one of encounters.
The city preserves traces of different periods and cultures, visible in its heritage, architecture and urban layout. Tavira was granted city status in 1520, during the reign of King Manuel I, at a time when it played an important role in the economic and port life of the Algarve.
Over the centuries, the relationship with the river, the sea, fishing, salt production and agriculture shaped the identity of this territory.
Today, that history remains present, alongside a living city deeply connected to its landscape.
A city with its own identity
There are places whose atmosphere we recognise immediately.
Tavira is one of those places.
The white façades, reixa doors, traditional roofs, streets descending towards the river and the constant presence of water give the city a distinctive identity.
Tavira’s traditional architecture preserves characteristics that span different periods of its history.
And then there is the Gilão River.
The river crosses the city and creates a kind of axis around which Tavira is organised. The old bridge over the Gilão, now pedestrianised, remains one of the city’s most emblematic places.
And then there is nature.
The salt pans, Ria Formosa, the proximity of the beaches and the landscape stretching between the hills and the sea mean that, in Tavira, nature is always close by.
It is a city that invites you to walk, observe, breathe and simply be.
Perhaps it is this combination of heritage, nature and human scale that makes Tavira so distinctive.
A city that reveals itself through a calm and serene pace, to the attentive gaze that allows itself to immerse in its surroundings.
Why did we choose Tavira?
Choosing Tavira as the home of Āshrama was not by chance.
It was a choice made through feeling — an enchantment with this beautiful city.
Here, we found a city with history, identity and character, deeply connected to nature and with a human scale that is very dear to us.
The proximity of the sea, the salt pans and Ria Formosa, the presence of the river, the beauty of the historic streets and Tavira’s particular rhythm were among the elements that made us recognise this as a special place.
Yoga is a philosophy of life that expands consciousness and promotes harmony and balance, and we felt that Tavira had space for this.
It was here that we chose to create Āshrama.
Since 2013, this has been the place where we teach and practise Yoga Sámkhya, preserving the tradition and transmission of Traditional Yoga from India.
A place that was born in Tavira and that, over the years, has also been building its own history within the city.
An unexpected place in the heart of Tavira
There is something curious about the story of Āshrama.
We are in the heart of Tavira, yet in a place that many people probably would not imagine finding when they think of a Yoga Centre.
A place dedicated to the practice, study and knowledge of Traditional Yoga from India, situated in a discreet and unexpected part of the city.
That is why we like the idea of Āshrama being “Tavira’s best-kept secret.”
Because beyond what can be seen on the surface, there are places we only discover when we allow ourselves to enter. The same happens with Yoga.
A city known for its light, the Gilão River, its historic streets, salt pans and proximity to the sea welcomes, at its heart, a place where an ancient Wisdom is practised through a Living Tradition.
This is where Yoga meets Tavira.
And this is where Āshrama continues to build its story.
